CCUS Costing Software
Costing Model for Integrated Carbon Capture and Storage (COSMIC)
Applicable to all sectors considering CCUS solutions
‘COSMIC’ stands for ‘Costing Model for Integrated Carbon Capture and Storage’, and is software used to calculate the costs of your CCUS project. It has an easy-to-use Graphic User Interface (GUI) that provides options for various CO2 capture technologies, CO2 compression, and different modes of CO2 transport. Fossil fuel based or renewable energy can be selected to meet the energy requirements for the CCS chain.
COSMIC uses mass and energy balances to determine the type and size of equipment required. Equipment costs are estimated using published/literature data, scaling law and the use of Lang factors. The model also calculates the mass of CO2 captured and CO2 avoided.
| Features | Description |
|---|---|
| Full incremental cash flow analysis. | The model prepares cash flows for the project both before and after the addition of CCS. The incremental cash flow is also calculated. |
| Optimal specific cost of CCS estimated. | CCS cost is optimised between the cost of transport and injection. |
| Multiple currencies. | COSMIC estimates cost in Australian dollars and other nominated currencies. |
| Adjustable cost year. | Costs can be calculated in any year since 2020 by use of published cost indices. |
| Range of preset sources. | COSMIC comes with a range of preset sources covering both fossil fuel and industrial sources of CO2. The user can add new sources. |
| Range of power supply options. | Energy for CCS can be supplied from the existing plant or from a new-build plant. A range of electricity source types are available. |
| Updated solvent absorption capture model. | The user can add new solvents. |
| Added gas separation membrane capture. | COSMIC can also estimate the cost of capture by a range of membranes configurations. The user can add new membranes. |
| Automatic compressor on/off and type selection. | The model can automatically determine whether a compressor is necessary and also what type of compressor is required. |
| Improved injectivity equation. | The injectivity model estimates numbers of wells with consideration of dynamic and interference effects in the formation. |
| Expanded injection cost model. | COSMIC calculates the cost of every well and every platform, as well as the cost of in-field distribution pipelines. |
| Import configurations. | Case configurations can be imported using a CSV file template. |
| Export results and cash flows. | The result of modelling runs as well as incremental cash flows can be exported in both the CSV and XML file formats. |
