Your unique prospect deserves the same rigour as CCS

The expertise behind CCS transfers directly

CO2Tech's core expertise — geological characterisation, reservoir assessment, subsurface modelling, and long-term monitoring — is highly transferable to geothermal appraisal and natural hydrogen exploration. Related subsurface science. Same rigour.

For two decades, CO2Tech has built its capabilities  at the leading edge of science.  Our team understands  the potential of the subsurface, how  to characterise it, and how to evaluate  it over time. That expertise was applied first to CO₂ storage — but the skills themselves are not CO₂-specific.

If you are considering geothermal appraisal or exploring for a natural hydrogen play, you can draw on the same body of knowledge: geological formation evaluation, subsurface characterisation, reservoir and flow modelling, risk assessment, and monitoring programme design. What changes is the target. What remains constant is the quality of the science.

CO2Tech provides independent, vendor-neutral advisory across all three domains. We have no equipment to sell, no drilling contracts to win, and no technology alliances that bias our advice.

Geothermal Appraisal

Geothermal projects live or die on subsurface confidence. CO2Tech brings field-proven subsurface expertise to geothermal appraisal:

Formation evaluation and resource characterisation — assessment of reservoir temperature, permeability, porosity, and heat flow across prospective formations

Geological modelling — 3D static and dynamic models to define resource extent, productivity, and longevity

Reservoir simulation — modelling of thermal and fluid behaviour to underpin production forecasts and well placement decisions

Risk and uncertainty quantification — structured assessment of geological risk for investment decisions and regulatory submissions

MMV programme design — monitoring, measurement, and verification frameworks using the latest in subsurface monitoring technologies for operational oversight and regulatory compliance.

Whether you are at first-pass feasibility or advancing toward a resource declaration, CO2Tech provides the independent technical assessment that investors and regulators require.

Our Otway International Test Centre, where we've conducted over 20 years of CCS experiments, is located in the Otway Basin in Victoria, Australia.

The broader Otway Basin has attracted geothermal interest, particularly for hot sedimentary aquifer concepts where heat, permeability and fluid flow must all come together to make a viable resource.

While the Otway International Test Centre is not itself a geothermal development site, CO2Tech’s long-running field experience there provides highly relevant subsurface capability for geothermal appraisal and risk assessment in permeable sedimentary basin settings.

Geothermal projects require confidence in reservoir characterisation, permeability distribution, fluid movement, pressure response, geomechanical behaviour, induced seismicity risk and long-term monitoring; many of the same technical disciplines that underpin safe CO2 storage.

Through more than 20 years of work at the OITC, CO2Tech has developed practical expertise in subsurface modelling, pressure and fluid monitoring, seismic and fibre-optic sensing, geomechanical assessment, and coupled thermal–hydraulic–mechanical behaviour.

These capabilities are transferable to geothermal regions where heat is accessed by producing, injecting or circulating fluids through permeable formations, helping proponents understand how a reservoir may respond and how that response can be monitored and managed over time.

Natural Hydrogen Exploration

Natural (or geological) hydrogen is an emerging exploration target. The subsurface skills required to appraise a natural hydrogen prospect — identifying prospective formations, assessing trapping and migration pathways, evaluating containment integrity — are the same skills applied to CO₂ storage and conventional hydrocarbon exploration.

CO2Tech provides independent advisory for natural hydrogen exploration programs:

Prospectivity assessment — geological screening and ranking of target formations based on source, migration, accumulation, and preservation criteria.

Basin and formation analysis — evaluation of geological settings with demonstrated or prospective natural hydrogen occurrence.

Containment and trap integrity — assessment of cap rock integrity, fault seal, and retention risk.

Subsurface characterisation — integration of seismic, well, and geochemical data to reduce exploration risk.

MMV and monitoring frameworks — monitoring programme design using the latest in subsurface monitoring technologies enable early economic decisions.

Given that natural hydrogen science is still developing, independent technical review — untethered from vendor or exploration company interest — is particularly valuable at this stage of the industry's evolution.
